Conference | Competitions & Awards

At each annual conference, the Human Behavior and Evolution Society holds three separate competitions: a New Investigator Competition, a Post-Doctoral Competition, and a Poster Competition. A separate committee of HBES members is selected for each competition. Winners of each competition get a $500 cash prize.

New Investigator Competition

Eligibility: Individuals who are currently enrolled in a graduate program are eligible to enter the NI competition. To be considered for the competition, papers must be orally presented as well as written and submitted. If you would like to enter the NI competition, you must:

  • Submit your paper either as an individual talk or as a talk in a symposium. Deadline for abstract submission: TBA.
  • Submit the completed manuscript for the paper you wish to enter into the award competition. The graduate student competing for this award must be the primary contributor to the paper entered (though co-authors are permitted.)

Post-Doctoral Competition

Eligibility: Individuals who completed a PhD within the past 5 years are eligible to enter the PD competition. To be considered for the competition, papers must be orally presented as well as written and submitted. If you would like to enter the PD competition, you must:

  • Submit your paper either as an individual talk or as a talk in a symposium. Deadline for abstract submission: TBA.
  • Submit the completed manuscript for the paper you wish to enter into the award competition. The individual competing for this award must be the primary contributor to the paper entered (though co-authors are permitted.)

Poster Competition

Eligibility: All posters are automatically entered into the poster competition. Deadline for poster abstract submission: TBA.

Awards

The Human Behavior and Evolution Society Early Career Award and Lifetime Career Award recognize individuals for their contributions to the field. To nominate someone for either Award, please see information posted on the HBES website.

HBES Early Career Award

The HBES Early Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution recognizes excellent young scientists who have made distinguished theoretical and/or empirical contributions to the study of evolution and human behavior.

HBES Lifetime Achievement Award

The HBES Lifetime Career Award for Distinguished Scientific Contribution is presented to candidates who have made distinguished theoretical or empirical contributions to basic research in evolution and human behavior.

Margo Wilson Award

Each year, the editors of Evolution and Human Behavior, the official journal of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society, award The Margo Wilson Award for the best paper published in Evolution and Human Behavior. View previous award winners.
