F1.4: Intergroup violence and mental state attribution in two societies (Colin Holbrook) Friday July 1, 2016 11:00 am 11:20 am Salon C

ABSTRACT: Attributions of intelligence to enemies should be functionally heightened in contexts of violent intergroup conflict as, ceteris paribus, overestimation of adversaries’ strategic guile is less costly than underestimation. This hypothesis was supported in convergent studies conducted among i) the Achuar and Quichua factions of Conambo, a small village in rural Ecuador (N = 50), ii) participants in Paintball combat simulations in Los Angeles (N = 125), and iii) online U.S. participants who viewed either an IED blast in Iraq or a control video (= 351).  By contrast, exploratory tests of attributions of affective states to adversaries produced mixed results.  A follow-up online study (= 328) tested the complementary prediction that cues of conflict functionally increase the accuracy with which individuals can detect others’ affective states, utilizing a modified version of the “Reading in the Eyes in the Mind” task (Baron-Cohen et al., 2001).  Indeed, relative to controls, participants who viewed the IED detonation were 4% more accurate at perceiving negative—but not positive or neutral—affective states.  The increase in accuracy in the threat condition was suppressed, rather than mediated, by the feelings of arousal, fear, anger and sadness elicited by the video.  These results will be discussed as they inform future research on mental state attribution in threat contexts spanning domains (e.g., pathogen-transmission, resource scarcity).
