HBES was founded October 29, 1988 at the University of Michigan. Participants in a
national conference on Evolution, Psychology and Psychiatry (sponsored by the University
of Michigan Evolution and Human Behavior Program) voted to create the organization, decide
on a name, elect the first officers, and create a constitution for the Society. The
Society was formed to promote the exchange of ideas and research findings using
evolutionary theory, including studies of animal behavior, to better understand human
nature.
HBES is highly eclectic, consisting of scholars from a great number of fields,
including psychology, anthropology, psychiatry, economics, medicine, law, philosophy,
literature, biology, sociology, business, artificial intelligence, political science, and
art. Our membership is world-wide, including residents of North America, Europe, Latin
America, Australia and the Far East. But despite the diversity of our disciplines and
nationalities, we all speak the common language of Darwinism.
Most of us are professional academics, but approximately 20% are students. As a way of
encouraging student scholarship, there is a special award granted each year at our annual
meeting to the most outstanding student paper. To finance this award (and other student
activities), members are encouraged to donate to the HBES Student Fund.
Payment of HBES dues entitles members to all membership benefits plus a subscription to
the journal, Evolution and Human Behavior. Membership Dues are as follows (U.S.
Dollars):
Dues for 1 and 3 Years:
