Neuroendocrinology Pre-conference at HBES – extended submission deadline!

The Connecting Minds In Social Neuroendocrinology and Evolution Preconference will return to HBES this year on Wednesday Mary 31st 9am-12pm. This event is an opportunity for all to connect with HBES researchers investigating the social influences and effects of hormones in the context of human evolution. We will hear from Drs. Sonia Cavigelli, Pennsylvania State University, and Keith Welker, University of Massachusetts Boston, who will give us an overview of their current research and discuss some issues related to conducting research connecting hormones and social behaviour from an evolutionary perspective.

A datablitz session will follow, where students and early career researchers will provide brief research talks, followed by an opportunity to network and receive feedback on their research. Participants in the datablitz session will also be invited to a mentoring lunch where they will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with our keynote speakers.

All students, post-docs, and early career researchers working in the field of social neuroendocrinology are encouraged to submit an abstract for this datablitz session. Evolution and Biology of Leadership: A New Synthesis

Leadership is one of the most important research themes in the social sciences, permeating all scales of human cooperation, from intra-household decision-making to the management of complex organizations and states. Leadership is also a growing area of interest in the evolutionary and biological sciences, which are providing new insights into the emergence and dynamics of leader-follower relationships in human and non-human societies (Couzin et al., 2005; King et al., 2009; Smith et al., 2016). Greater integration of theory and method across the social and biological sciences can be helpful to inform future theory, research, and best leadership practice, which is a core aim of The Leadership Quarterly too (Antonakis, 2017).

A two-year post-doctoral position in Cultural Evolution and Social Cognition is currently open at the Département d’Etudes Cognitives (DEC) of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. This project will be conducted in collaboration with Nicolas Baumard at the Institut Jean Nicod (IJN) and Julie Grèzes at the Laboratoire de Neurosciences Cognitives (LNC).

Avoidance behaviours protect species as diverse as worms, ants, fish, monkeys and humans from infection by reducing or preventing contact with parasites and pathogens. This meeting will unite researchers working in invertebrates, vertebrates and humans to discuss the evolution of pathogen avoidance behaviour and how these avoidance instincts can be harnessed to improve animal and human health around the world. Join us to network with researchers working in a diversity of experimental models to share techniques and knowledge and form multidisciplinary collaborations.
This is a residential conference, which allows for increased discussion and networking.

Please send your nominations to Mark Flinn (flinnm@missouri.edu) by 15 February.  Make sure that anyone you nominate is an HBES member and is willing to serve.  And for those you nominate, please inform them if they are chosen to be on the official ballot we will need a biosketch of no more than 300 words and a link to their personal or academic webpage.

After the nomination closing date, the Election Committee will present the election slate to our Executive Committee for approval.

We plan to open the on-line election on 1 March and close it 21 March, 2017.  Results of the election will be announced at the annual meeting in Boise, Idaho on May 31 – June 3, 2017.

Postdoc in Evolutionary Approaches to Maternal-Child Health in Southern California

A postdoctoral position is available at Chapman University in Orange, CA for a project utilizing interdisciplinary approaches to generate new insights to solve key problems in maternal-child health. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to develop and test novel hypotheses pertaining to maternal-child health in collaboration with Dr. Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook (project PI) and members of Chapman’s Center for Excellence in Biopsychosocial Approaches to Health (CEBAH).

The ideal candidate would bring unique expertise and perspectives from biological anthropology, Darwinian medicine, health psychology, evolutionary psychology, public health, endocrinology or other fields to formulate and test interdisciplinary research questions. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work with large existing NIH funded data sets that contain longitudinal data assessing biomarkers, hormones, psychosocial factors, ecological conditions, behavior and health outcomes in mothers, children, and fathers followed from pregnancy to the postpartum period. The postdoctoral fellow will also interface with local government and private stakeholders in an effort to create translational community-based interventions to improve maternal-child health.
