Lecturer in Biological Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at Boston University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Biological Anthropology for the Spring 2019 semester.  Applications should have a PhD and evidence of teaching excellence.  The position will cover two courses in our department, in the field of Human Biology: “The Evolution of Human Life History” and “Evolutionary Medicine.”  The semester commences on January 22, 2019. One-year post-doctoral position in Cultural Evolution and Social Cognition

one-year post-doctoral position in Cultural Evolution and Social Cognition is currently open at the Département d’Etudes Cognitives (DEC) of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. This project will be conducted under the supervision of Nicolas Baumardat the Institut Jean Nicod (IJN) and Julie Grèzes at the Laboratoire de Neurosciences Cognitives (LNC).

Project Summary

The project aims to document the so-called ‘process of civilization’, the set of long-term psychological changes that occurred in Europe from 1300 to 1900. The project will study the evolution of emotional displays in European literature (novels, plays) from the late Middle Age to the modern times and will test whether economic development can account for the evolution of social preferences such as trust, morality and honor. More generally, the goal of the project is to test whether life history parameters (mortality, affluence, external threat) can account for psychological changes in history. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with a strong background inprogramming and data analysis.

Funding and Salary

The position is funded by a LabeX grant from PSL* Research University. The salary will be adjusted to the candidate’s post doctoral experience (start salary for a 1st year post doc: 30,000 euros/year net; 5 years of experience: 38,000).

Start Date

The start date will be determined with the candidate but will need to fall within the following range: 30/09/2018 to 01/01/2019.

Requirements

  • The candidate should have a PhD (or be in the final stages of obtaining such a degree) in Cognitive Science, Cultural Evolution, Economics or areas related to quantitative analysis of social phenomena.
  • Experience with data analysis along with strong programming and statistical skills (matlab, r).
  • Strong language and writing skills in English are required (note: speaking French is not required).

University of Miami, Department of Psychology, Tenure-Track Position in Adult Clinical Psychology

Department of Psychology, College of Arts & Sciences, is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member to join our department’s Adult Clinical Psychology division starting in the fall of 2019.  Appointment will likely be at the Assistant Professor level, but the possibility exists for an appointment at a higher level.

The existing Adult track faculty are a diverse and active group whose work integrates clinical science with basic research in personality, evolutionary, and motivational psychology. As a group, we are committed to the idea that an understanding of normal behavior fosters a better understanding of problem behavior. We are seeking an experimental psychopathologist whose interests would complement and supplement those of the existing faculty group. With regard to specialty, we are open to a wide range of possibilities. Ph.D. in Psychology or related field required. Although a clinical psychology degree is preferred, non-clinical candidates will also be considered.

The person hired will be expected to continue to develop an independent research program.  This person is also expected to be able to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level, supervise graduate students in both research and clinical domains, and serve on thesis, dissertation, and other departmental committees.

Robert Trivers, Ph.D., presents Evolutionary Psychology & Ethics

In this two-part session Dr. Trivers will first lay out the theoretical map for ethical behavior, reciprocal altruism, cooperation and deception in human relationships. In part two he will explain the co-evolutionary struggle between deceiver and the deceived, the intrinsic bias in favor of the deceiver, and the evolution of self-deception to facilitate the efficacy of deceptive behavior. Active discussion and a Q&A section for attendees is included in both parts.

Post-doctoral fellowship in biomedical anthropology at Baylor University

The Department of Anthropology at Baylor University seeks to fill a post-doctoral fellowship focused on biomedical anthropology. This Fellow will join a growing department with interest in applied perspectives on the anthropology of health, broadly conceived. Candidates should have personal research interests that combine topics and tools from the social/behavioral and physical/life sciences to address problems relating to global/public health, human biology, and/or evolutionary medicine. The Fellow will work with Dr. Mark Flinn on ongoing projects related to child health and family relationships, and will assist with grant writing, database management and statistical analyses, and research project implementation, likely outside the United States. The Fellow will also be tasked with forming linkages among current faculty in Anthropology with those in related disciplines, including Biology, Psychology and Neuroscience, Environmental Science, Sociology, Education, Family Studies, Public Health, and the College of Medicine.
